Naguva nayana madhura mauna- English translation

Naguva nayana madhura mauna....

Movie: Pallavi Anupallavi
Starring: Anil Kapoor, Kiran Vairale
Music Director: Ilayaraja
Lyrics: R N Jayagopal
Singers: SPB, S Janaki

I don't remember when I started listening to this song. May be when we had only radio in our home or when we got TV for the first time: when I was in 4th or 5th standard. But what I can say for now is that I am obsessed with this song since a very long time. I can listen to this song for a whole day. That is the magic of Ilayaraja sir. Let it be his old songs or the songs which are quite recent like the ones from the movie Aadinagalu, they just haunt at the back of my mind.

Since the time I started to understand the meaning of this song I was very curious about the plot of this movie. I used to really like Kiran in this song. In those olden days when there was no computer, youtube whenever I heard or watched this song I used to tell my mother about my wish to watch this movie until one day when she narrated the story like many others which she used to narrate to us during night time to me and to my sister. That just increased my craving to watch this film and when I finally watched it, it was an experience.

So here is my interpretation (or translation) of the song...

Naguva nayana madhura mouna
midiva hrudaya ire maatheke?
Hosa bhaasheyidu rasa kaavyavidu
ida haadalu kavi beke?

The smiling eyes and the sweet silence
The thumping heart, amidst this why are the words??
This is a new language, a romantic poem
Do we need a poet to sing this??

Ningaagi heluve katheyondanu
naanindu nagisuve ee ninnanu
Irulalli kaanuve kirunageyanu
kannalli huchchedda honganasanu
Joteyaagi nadeve naa maleyalu
Bidadante hidive ee kaiyyanu
Geleya.... Jotege haari baruve
Baana elle daati nalive

I will say a story today just for you
I will make you smile, yes it is you
Even in darkness I see your smile (muskuraahat)
And those crazy golden-dreams in your eye
Even in rain I walk beside you
I will hold your hand forever
Friend... I will fly with you
And will rejoice beyond the limits of the sky

Naguva nayana.....

Ee raathri hado pisumaathali
naa kande inidaada savi raagava
Neenalli naanilli ekaanthade
naakande nammade hosa lokava
Ee sneha thandide edeyalli
endendu alisada rangoli
Aase hoova haasi kaade
nade nee kanasaa hosaki bidade

Tonight in these whispers
I hear sweet melodies
In your absence and in the loneliness
What I live is only our new worlds
This friendship has brought
a beautiful rangoli* in my heart
Spreading flowers for you, I wait
Please walk without smothering my dreams

Naguva nayana madhura mouna
midiva hrudaya ire maatheke?
Hosa bhaasheyidu rasa kaavyavidu
ida haadalu kali beke?

The smiling eyes and the sweet silence
The thumping heart, amidst this why are the words??
This is a new language, a romantic poem
**Should we learn to sing this??

* Rangoli is an art form where patterns are created with materials like flowers, flower petals, rice four, color powders, lime stone powder etc.,
** I have always wondered if it is kavi (poet) or kali (learn).. I feel both fit well in the line.. So I have kept both the words.
